Safety Recommendations

Install Antivirus Software

Computer viruses and malware can disrupt your computer in a variety of different ways, from silently stealing your personal information, to irreversibly destroying your files. They are most frequently transmitted through misleading websites, email attachments, instant messages, and peer-to-peer downloads. To guard against the spread of viruses and malware at HSU, ResNet requires that all connected computers have antivirus installed and running at all times.

Backup your work

Backing up your data can be critical to your success at Humboldt State University. We recommend that you regularly backup all of your work to a USB flash drive. Alternatively, GoogleMicrosoft, and Apple each offer file sync solutions that can automatically copy files between devices as well as store a backup of your work online. These services are free and offer 5GB - 7GB of storage. ResNet recommends Google drive because it is compatible with your HSU email address. Paid services, such as CrashPlan and Carbonite, will backup your entire computer online and offer more advanced features.

If you share copyrighted material without permission, you are breaking the law and could be subject to legal consequences. While ResNet does not monitor the content of residents' uploads and downloads, the entertainment industry actively looks for users who engage in the unlawful sharing of copyrighted material.
